On October 6, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will present “Voices of Veterans,” a concert and conversation about composers and artists who have “used their creativity to process their own experiences of war, and will include engaging community conversations about the challenges armed forces personnel and their families face.” VSO Resident Conductor Benjamin Rous will lead a program at Tidewater Community College’s Roper Performing Arts Center in downtown Norfolk. The event will also feature Lieutenant Robert J. “Seph” Coats as guest conductor and baritone Brandon Morales. The VSO performs at venues throughout southeastern Virginia, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Newport News, Williamsburg, and outlying Virginia and North Carolina communities. The orchestra’s Tidewater Community College concerts aim to provide a more inviting and educational element through the use of social media and interactive performances, and the orchestra states that the series attracts attract one of its most demographically and ethnically diverse audiences, as well as more students. The audience on October 6 will be encouraged to use their smartphones throughout the evening to engage in the conversation via social media.
