Orchestra 2001, the Philadelphia-based contemporary-music ensemble, will perform the U.S. premiere of John Luther Adams’s Across the Distance, scored for dozens of French horns in an outdoor space, on October 7. Two free performances of the 25-minute work will take place at noon and 1 p.m. at Race Street Pier by Ben Franklin Bridge (rain date October 8). The performances are part of a series of free public concerts in Philadelphia green spaces made possible by a “New Audiences/New Places” grant from the William Penn Foundation. Orchestra 2001 also performed Adams’s Inuksuit on September 20 along the Schuylkill River Trail between Walnut Street and Spruce Street. Jayce Ogren is artistic director of Orchestra 2001, which was founded by James Freeman in 1988.
