The fifth annual Colour of Music Festival, spotlighting black composers and musicians through performances and discussions, will take place in venues throughout Charleston, South Carolina from October 18 to 22. The festival will open with a presentation and book signing by Christopher Brooks and Robert Sims, authors of the 2014 biography Roland Hayes, The Legacy of An American Tenor. Performances will include a program of music by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, including The Song of Hiawatha Overture and Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, with the festival orchestra and chorus led by Kazem Abdullah and Roderick Dixon as tenor soloist. An October 22 concert will feature Robert Nathaniel Dett’s Chariot Jubilee, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, and the world premiere of Trevor Weston’s Unburied, Unmourned, Unmarked, led by Morehouse College conductor David E. Morrow. The festival will include chamber music and piano and organ recitals, as well as education and community engagement activities at schools in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties. Soprano Leontyne Price, who turned 90 in February 2017, will be the focus of an October 20 discussion with Christopher Brooks and Price’s brother, George B. Price.
