“The St. Louis Symphony reported Monday it saw an operating surplus for fiscal 2017, its first this century, as ticket sales and total earned revenue rose,” writes Diana Barr in Monday’s (10/16) St. Louis Business Journal (subscription required). “In its fiscal year ended Aug. 31, the organization reported total operating revenue of $30.29 million and total operating expenses of $30.27 million, with an operating surplus of $18,000. That compares with its reported fiscal 2016 operating revenue of $28.37 million and operating expenses of $28.14 million, when adjusted to exclude nearly $1.1 million in depreciation and pension adjustments…. The symphony’s fiscal 2017 earned revenue of over $9.1 million included $6.94 million in ticket sales.… The symphony posted a record fiscal 2017 annual campaign, raising $7.95 million from 5,406 donors, of whom 32.9 percent were new. As of Aug. 31, the symphony said its endowment has reached $214 million. Officials said they have raised over $85 million to date in the quiet phase of the symphony’s Realizing Greatness Campaign, including more than $65 million for its endowment, nearly $5 million for Powell Hall renovations and over $15 million for its programs.”
