The Philharmonic Society of Orange County has announced that effective this season, the Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra will officially integrate with the Philharmonic Society. The orchestra will be known as the Philharmonic Society’s Orange County Youth Symphony. As part of the Philharmonic Society, the musicians of the Orange County Youth Symphony will have the opportunity to attend master classes with Philharmonic Society artists—among them the Kronos Quartet in late October—along with open rehearsals and concerts presented by the Philharmonic Society. The Orange County Youth Symphony was formed in 1970, when the Orange County Department of Education, founding conductor John Koshak, and Chapman University created a top-tier honor orchestra for local high school students. Founded in 1954, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County presents orchestras, chamber ensembles, performing groups, and artists, and is a resident company in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The Philharmonic Society and the Orange County Youth Symphony have collaborated since 1986 on educational, family, and youth programs, among them the Concerts for Fifth Graders at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, which annually attract 15,000 students.
