Trombonists from symphony orchestras in Texas and elsewhere will perform in a November 15 benefit entitled “D/FW Trombones for Houston: A Concert Celebrating Texas Trombone Culture for Harvey Relief.” The concert at Plano West Senior High School in Plano, Texas, will benefit band programs throughout the greater Houston area that suffered losses in the flooding from Hurricane Harvey. Local players and ensembles, as well as professional players with Dallas origins, are donating their services. Among the performers will be John Kitzman, former principal trombone, Dallas Symphony Orchestra; Jeff Dee, principal bass trombone, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; John Sebastian Vera, principal trombone, Pittsburgh Opera; John Romero, principal trombone, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra; Derek W. Hawkes, assistant principal trombone, Nashville Symphony; Slideshow Trombone Ensemble; and Them Bones. Musicians have partnered with the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation and its Music Rising Initiative to raise funds earmarked specifically for Houston-area band programs. More information here.
