The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) has announced the appointment of LISA WHITFIELD as talent development officer, a new position that supports diversity and inclusion initiatives. Whitfield will manage CIM’s new Minority Artist Fellowship program, which provides individual musical instruction and support for African-American and Latino youth beginning in grades 7-9. Whitfield will also work with colleagues at the institute’s Center for Innovative Musicianship to create diversity and inclusion programming for faculty and students, and will serve as the primary liaison between the MAF students, their families, and the institute. Whitfield was a founding member of the Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program faculty, where she created the music theory curriculum and placement testing system. Most recently, she provided private musical instruction and mentoring in Ohio’s Lakewood City schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory and a master’s degree from Juilliard in viola performance.
