The Sphinx Organization, the Detroit-based group dedicated to increasing diversity in the arts, is forming a professional vocal ensemble called Exigence. The founding director of the group is Eugene Rogers, and the ensemble will debut on February 2, 2018 during SphinxConnect, Sphinx’s annual convening in Detroit. Exigence will also perform on February 4 at the finals concert of the 2018 Sphinx Competition for young black and Latino string players. Repertoire for the ensemble will range from traditional classical concert works to newly commissioned scores, and works by black and Latino composers will be emphasized. Said Rogers, “It is an honor to launch this important and much needed professional ensemble that highlights and expands the opportunities of diversity within the professional vocal and choral community.”
