The Abilene Philharmonic is now accepting applications for its biennial Nelda Hodges Young Artist Competition, which has several cash prizes to be used towards continued music education. Applications are due by January 26, 2018, with the first round of the completion taking place on February 24 and the second round on March 24. The competition is open to woodwind, brass, percussion, string, and piano students between the ages of twelve and eighteen who live in nearby Texas school regions and have not yet graduated from high school. During the first round of the competition, judges evaluate a live recording of the performer. Finalists are invited to the second round to perform live for a panel of judges that includes Abilene Philharmonic Music Director David Itkin. The Nelda Hodges Young Artist Competition was established in 2008 to help support outstanding young musicians in the Abilene area.
