“Richard Hyman says his love for music began when he was in the fifth grade at Pelion Middle School in Lexington County. He started on the trombone, and it was love at first sight,” writes Shamira McCray in Sunday’s (12/10) SCNow.com (Florence, S.C.). “Now as a band instructor at Sneed Middle School in Florence and conductor of the Florence Symphony Youth Orchestra, Hyman is trying to instill that same love of music in his students…. As a teacher, Hyman said, his biggest goal is for children to love music and be appreciative of it, whether or not they make it a career. ‘I want the kids that come from me to know what it takes to do things at a high level,’ Hyman said…. While he directs students as a group during class time, he also works individually with students who might need further assistance. At 24, Hyman said, he thinks he brings a certain type of energy and ‘hyperness’ to his teaching…. This season is Hyman’s first as the conductor of the Florence Symphony Youth Orchestra [which] held auditions a couple of weeks ago and will start rehearsals in January…. Hyman also performs as a member of the Florence Symphony Orchestra.”
