The Sun Valley Summer Symphony, based in Idaho, has announced the appointment of DEREK L. DEAN as executive director. Currently the chief operating officer of the San Francisco Symphony, Dean will take his post in Sun Valley on March 1, 2018. Prior to joining the San Francisco Symphony as chief operating officer in June 2015, Dean was on its Board of Governors. He stepped in to serve as the orchestra’s acting executive director twice. Dean spent over twenty years with the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, and also spent two years as a partner with the Exetor Group, coaching senior executives and leading leadership development programs.  He holds a B.A. in American Studies from Carleton College, and an M.B.A. from the Stanford University School of Business. The Sun Valley Summer Symphony was founded in 1985 as the Elkhorn Music Festival. Under the leadership of Music Director Alasdair Neale since 1995, the orchestra gives free concerts to over 50,000 people annually.
