Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra, based in Los Angeles, has received a $70,000 grant from California’s Durfee Foundation. Kaleidoscope plans to expand a music education program it recently launched at a Title I elementary school in Culver City, providing music instruction to 100 children each week. The ensemble raised its payment to musicians 33 percent this season, and was able to hire administrative staff. The orchestra is in the midst of a $500,000 fundraising campaign during 2017-18, its fourth season. All the orchestra’s concerts are “pay what you can,” and many feature music by contemporary composers. It also performs free at schools, hospitals, homeless shelters, and other underserved parts of the community.
