“It seems to be the Year of the Woman” at the 2018 Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, writes Adam Parker in last Wednesday’s (1/10) Post and Courier (Charleston). “Women are responsible for composing much of the classical music…. A new opera [Tree of Codes] by … Liza Lim, will be mounted at the Dock Street Theatre. The music of nine female composers will be performed in the Music in Time series…. Lidiya Yankovskaya, is conducting [Donizetti’s opera Pia de’ Tolomei]…. Among the big classical music offerings is Brahms’ German Requiem at the Gaillard, featuring the Westminster Choir, Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra and soloist Natalia Pavlova.… The chamber music series, led by Geoff Nuttall, features 11 distinct programs, the return of countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, newcomers Peter Moore (the series’ first trombonist), tenor Paul Groves and the Brooklyn-based JACK quartet.” Other musicians performing at Spoleto will include the Chucho Valdes Quartet, the Fred Hersch Trio, pianists Vijay Iyer, Pedja Muzijevic, and Jon Batiste, and more.
