The La Jolla Music Society in California has announced that pianist INON BARNATAN will be the music director of SummerFest, its annual chamber music festival. Barnatan will assume the role in 2019, following current Music Director Cho-Liang Lin, who announced last year that 2018-his 18th season-will be his final one. Barnatan’s tenure at SummerFest will begin during the festival’s first season at a performing arts center currently under construction in La Jolla, California. Barnatan made his SummerFest debut in 2012, and has played the festival many times since. He returns to La Jolla Music Society this spring to perform in “Schubert’s Swan Song,” a three-concert exploration of the composer’s late works curated by Barnatan. A recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant and Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award, Barnatan has performed with many leading American and international orchestras. In 2014, he was named the New York Philharmonic’s first artist-in-association. Barnatan was a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS Two program from 2006 to 2009, and frequently collaborates with chamber artists. He has commissioned and performed many works by living composers.
