On Sunday, March 11, Jennifer Montone, principal horn of the Philadelphia Orchestra, will perform Richard Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1 with Youth Orchestra of Bucks County’s Symphony Orchestra at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia Orchestra musicians have been regularly visiting the youth orchestra: in February 2017 Montone gave a master class with YOBC musicians, and this weekend David Kim, the Philadelphia Orchestra’s concertmaster, will give a master class on March 10. Montone notes, “What really got me super into music was a youth orchestra,” and says she remembers having the opportunity to travel at age 13 with her older sister’s youth orchestra to Scotland. “The community aspect was great,” she recalls. “It’s so good for this age group to find a place where you belong.” More than 240 students in grades 3 to 12 from Bucks County school districts and surrounding counties, currently participate each week in the Youth Orchestra of Bucks County’s orchestras.
