In connection with its April 14-15 performances of Holst’s The Planets, the Wichita Symphony Orchestra has commissioned a local brewery to produce a pale ale named Peace & Jollity. The ale, which will be tapped on April 5 at Central Standard Brewing, is inspired by two movements from the Holst: Venus, the Bringer of Peace, and Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity. The concerts will feature film projected above the orchestra displaying footage from NASA and the European Space Agency while exploring the historic and scientific background of each planet. The film was curated and created by astronomer and visual artist Dr. José Francisco Salgado through KV 265, an organization that combines art and science. On April 10, the Wichita Symphony will host a music, beer, and food pairing event called “Classics on Tap,” where Music Director Daniel Hege and Dr. Salgado will speak about the WSO concerts, WSO musicians will perform, and food from Tanya’s Soup Kitchen will be served alongside CSB’s signature brews.
