GERHARDT ZIMMERMANN’s contract as music director of the Canton Symphony Orchestra has been renewed for five years. Next season will be his 38th year as the Ohio-based orchestra’s music director, and the orchestra’s 81st season. Zimmermann joined the CSO in 1980, when he was associate conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. In recognition of his leadership of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, the Zimmermann Symphony Center, which opened in 2014, is named for him. Zimmermann has led the Cleveland, Chicago, National, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, New Jersey, Syracuse, Rochester, and San Antonio orchestras as well as international ensembles. Since 2006, he has been director of orchestral activities at the University of Texas, Austin. Zimmermann served as music director and conductor of the North Carolina Symphony from 1982 to 2002, and conductor laureate from 2002 to 2007. From 1993 to 2014, he was music director and principal conductor of the Breckenridge (CO) Music Festival.
