“The British violinist Daniel Hope began the current season with the New Century Chamber Orchestra as interim artistic leader,” writes Joshua Kosman in Friday’s (3/16) San Francisco Chronicle. “Evidently things have gone so well that they’re going to make it permanent…. the orchestra announced on Friday, March 16, that Hope would succeed Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg as music director.” The appointment is effective with the 2018-19 season and “runs through the 2022-23 season.… Hope, 44, was originally appointed to a three-year stint with the title artistic partner, guiding the orchestra in the wake of Salerno-Sonnenberg’s departure in May after nine seasons as music director.” Hope is a frequent soloist with leading U.S. and international orchestras, and also directs chamber orchestras regularly as soloist. In 2016, he was appointed music director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, succeeding Sir Roger Norrington. Hope received the 2015 European Cultural Prize for Music and has been nominated for numerous Grammy Awards. His latest recording is Journey to Mozart in collaboration with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra.
