ANDRÉS LOPERA has been named assistant conductor of Ohio’s Columbus Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras, effective September 1. The 34-year-old native of Colombia is currently in his third and final season as assistant conductor of the Colorado Symphony. As the CSO’s assistant conductor, Lopera will become a member of the CSO’s artistic team, collaborating with Music Director Rossen Milanov and Principal Pops Conductor Stuart Chafetz to help shape future seasons. As music director of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras, Lopera will oversee all six orchestras and helm several CSO education, community engagement, and family concerts. Lopera has conducted orchestras including the Oregon Symphony, Toledo Symphony, New World Symphony, Metropolitan Youth Symphony (Portland, OR), and Portland (Oregon) Columbia Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra and the EAFIT Symphony Orchestra in his home country of Colombia, and has worked with professional and youth orchestras in Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Honduras.
