On May 5, Pennsylvania’s Reading Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 2017-18 season with a program entitled “Picture This!,” led by Music Director Andrew Constantine and featuring local artist Michele Byrne. The concert will feature Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, and Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with soloist Ilya Yakushev. Throughout the concert, Byrne will paint the orchestra in real time, and her work-in-progress will be projected on large screens. Also at the concert, graduating members of the Reading Symphony’s Orchestra Zone program—which provides free instrumental music lessons to the students of the Reading School District (grades 6-9)—will be recognized onstage for their accomplishments. In addition to Orchestra Zone, the RSO’s educational and outreach programs include the Reading Symphony Youth Orchestra, Junior Strings, and masterclasses for community members with visiting soloists.
