The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has extended ERINA YASHIMA’s appointment as Sir Georg Solti Conducting Apprentice through the 2018-19 season. Yashima was originally appointed for a two-year term beginning in 2016. As Solti Conducting Apprentice, Yashima spends at least ten weeks each season studying and assisting Music Director Riccardo Muti during his residencies with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In addition, she frequently leads the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the CSO’s training orchestra for young professional musicians, in a variety of settings and repertoire. In 2017, she assisted conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen during the CSO’s world-premiere performances of Salonen’s cello concerto for Yo-Yo Ma. Born in Germany, Yashima has led opera and orchestra performances in Italy, Austria, Transylvania, and Germany, and in September 2017 she was a cover conductor for the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. Guest conducting includes a collaboration with El Sistema in Venezuela. Yashima participated in Riccardo Muti’s Italian Opera Academy at the Ravenna Festival and in Bernard Haitink’s conducting master class at the Lucerne Festival.
