“The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra’s 56th annual composers award will be given to Kevin Puts at Saturday’s two concerts at the Fulton Theatre,” writes Jane Holahan in Thursday’s (4/5) Lancasteronline.com (Penn.). The concerts will feature two works by Puts and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6. “Puts, 46, is a leading contemporary composer of classical music…. he is a Pulitzer Prize winner [for his] 2012 opera ‘Silent Night’ … commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra…. It is one of many awards Puts has received during his career. He earned both his bachelor’s and doctor of musical art degrees from the Eastman School of Music. His masters degree came from Yale University…. Puts will attend both the 3 and 8 p.m. concerts to receive the composers award and will talk briefly about his music and the pieces the orchestra will perform.” The orchestra will performs Puts’s Network, which he says he “wrote as a student at the Eastman School in 1996,” and Hymn to the Sun, commissioned by Idaho’s Sun Valley Summer Symphony in 2008. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra Composers Award was established in 1959. Previous recipients include Howard Hansen, Ned Rorem, Joan Tower, and Michael Gandolfi.
