The Rockford Symphony Orchestra will host a “Leonard Bernstein at 100 City-wide Festival,” from April 12 to May 7 at locations in Rockford and Rockton, Illinois, with nine community partners. On April 12, Music Director Steven Larsen will give a free lecture on Bernstein’s life and music at the Nordlof Center of the Rockford Public Library. From April 19 to 22, Rockford University’s fine arts department will present Bernstein’s Candide at the Maddox Theatre, directed by Jeff Hendry and with an orchestra conducted by Steven Larsen. On April 28, the RSO will join with the Rockford Dance Company and Mendelssohn Chorale for an all-Bernstein concert that will include brass music, “Three Dance Episodes” from On the Town, the Chichester Psalms, and Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Also participating in the festival will be the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra and Rockford Art Museum.
