“The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra announces its 2018-19 concert season today, the first designed under new executive director Katherine Lehman and the twelfth for music director Michael Butterman,” writes Kelly Dean Hansen in Friday’s (4/6) Daily Camera (Boulder, CO). “The season theme is ‘Open Space,’ reflecting the orchestra’s continuing desire to celebrate Boulder’s values. The usual five-concert classical lineup at Macky Auditorium in Boulder is supplemented for the first time by a three-concert pops series.… In addition, the orchestra will play live music for a complete staging of the play ‘Amadeus’ by Peter Shaffer late in the season. University of Colorado Theatre and Dance Department head Bud Coleman will direct the play, with participation of actors from the department. Violinist Midori—whose concert is part of a multi-event residency with the Phil and the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras—leads an impressive slate of soloists. These also include pianist Garrick Ohlsson, soprano Mary Wilson and cellist Astrid Schween. The first classical concert, on Oct. 13, is dedicated to works inspired by space exploration, all of which incorporate innovative use of video. Including the annual ‘Nutcracker’ production with Boulder Ballet on Thanksgiving weekend, there are 10 total events, a significant expansion.”
