The San Diego Symphony has announced details of its 2018-19 season, the first under new Music Director Rafael Payare, who will lead his first program in January, featuring Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni, Strauss’s Don Juan, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition. That concert will take place during the orchestra’s monthlong “Hearing the Future” festival exploring youthful creation, curated by guest conductor Matthew Aucoin and partnering with San Diego arts, film, educational, and literary organizations. Payare will lead three additional January concerts featuring Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 and Britten’s Symphony for Cello and Orchestra, with soloist Alisa Weilerstein. Also planned are the November world premiere of a commissioned work by Javier Álvarez scored for orchestra, narrator, and four vihuelas (guitar-like instruments, originally from Spain, used in mariachi music), on a text by U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Filipe Herrera; the U.S. premiere of Noam Sheriff’s Lenny; and the West Coast premiere of Alyssa Weinberg’s Rein of Logic. The orchestra will launch a Rush Hour 2.0 series of short concerts. American composers in 2018-19 include Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, John Williams, Mason Bates, Michael Ippolito, Matthew Aucoion, Andrew Norman, Christopher Theofanidis, and Sean Shepherd.
