On April 14, Canada’s Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will perform the world premiere of Dorothy Chang’s Gateways: Concerto for piano and erhu soloists, featuring Nicole Ge Li (erhu) and Corey Hamm (piano), a duo known as The Erhu Project. Chang says the piece “evolved as patchwork of musical fragments, moments, and memories gathered from my own multicultural experience as a first-generation Chinese American, a Western expatriate living in Taiwan, and now an immigrant to Canada. The title refers to a Tang dynasty poem that depicts a gateway as both an opportunity and a barrier, reflecting a deep yearning for a faraway time, place, or memory.” William Rowson will conduct the concert, which also includes Helen Grime’s A Cold Spring, Kevin Lau’s Nocturne and Toccata, and HK Gruber’s Zeitfluren.
