“The Music Academy of the West has broadened the meaning of its moniker to include western Europe,” writes Nicholas Beard in Monday’s (4/16) MusicalAmerica.com (subscription required). “Having completed its four-year student alliance with the New York Philharmonic, MAW is moving on to the London Symphony Orchestra. Starting in summer 2018 and continuing for three years thereafter, some LSO principals will be in residence at the Academy in Santa Barbara, CA, to teach and mentor Academy fellows. Michael Tilson Thomas, the LSO’s conductor laureate, will occasionally join them, starting in 2019, as will other LSO conductors, including Elim Chan, winter of the 2014 Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition and a former LSO assistant conductor. The following winter, 12 of the 95 fellows, chosen through audition, will travel to London for ten days with the LSO and Music Director Sir Simon Rattle. They will be part of the orchestra’s daily routine, as well as receiving audition training and lessons. Then, in 2019 and 2021, the full LSO will perform side-by-side with the Academy Festival Orchestra. The Academy fellows range in age from 18 to 34; all are on scholarship.”
