The Virginia Symphony Orchestra, based in Hampton Roads, VA, has appointed GONZALO FARIAS as assistant conductor. He will conduct and be part of the programming team for the orchestra’s series in Williamsburg and at Regent University as well as the #VSOatRoper, PB&J Family, Pops!, and Symphony by the Sea series. For the past two seasons, Farias has held the conducting fellowship position at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under the mentorship of BSO Music Director Marin Alsop. He participated in the 2018 Malko Conducting Competition with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and took part in other conductor-training events in Europe. He attended the Pierre Monteux Festival, received the Bruno Walter Conducting Scholarship at the Cabrillo Music Festival, and was named “emergent conductor” at the Peninsula Music Festival. He is a former music director of the Joliet Symphony Orchestra and current associate conductor of the Occasional Symphony in Baltimore. Born in Chile, he earned a bachelor’s degree at the P.C. University of Chile, and pursued graduate studies at the New England Conservatory, University of Illinois, and the Peabody Conservatory.
