The Toronto Symphony Orchestra has appointed SIMON RIVARD as resident conductor and as conductor of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, beginning in the 2018-19 season. Rivard will conduct the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in select education, community, and classical concerts. Rivard, who was recently named one of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s “30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians under 30,” is currently associate conductor of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra (TBSO) in Ontario. During the TBSO’s 2017-18 season, he conducted more than 30 concerts and advocated for collaboration with Indigenous artists and local arts groups. In 2017, he stepped in for Jean-Philippe Tremblay as music director of the Orchestre de la Francophonie in Montreal. He has worked at organizations offering free music lessons to socioeconomically disadvantaged children in Montreal and Haiti. Rivard studied violin performance and orchestral conducting at the Montreal Conservatory of Music, and completed a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at McGill University.
