Cal Performances, the presenting, commissioning, and producing organization based at the University of California, Berkeley, has appointed S. SHARIQ YOSUFZAI (pictured) as interim executive director, effective June 15. He succeeds Matías Tarnopolsky, who will become president and CEO of the Philadelphia Orchestra this fall. ROB BAILIS, Cal Performances’ associate director, will serve as interim artistic director. A search for a permanent director of Cal Performances has been launched.

Shariq Yosufzai has been a member of Cal Performances’ board of trustees since July 2014 and has served as a vice chair of the board since July 2016. He also serves as president of the board of the Berkeley Symphony and as an executive committee member of the San Francisco Opera’s board. In March 2018, Yosufzai retired from the Chevron Corporation, where he had served as vice president of global diversity since 2013. Over the course of his 43-year career at Chevron, he served as president of several Chevron global businesses and oversaw large, multinational operating companies.

Rob Bailis joined Cal Performances in June 2013 and was promoted to associate director soon after. He has helped to shape several artistic initiatives, including Berkeley RADICAL; the curation of programming for dance, theater, and world stages; directing the Student Curators of Cal Performances in their annual presentation; and overseeing the fundraising, communications and marketing, and education departments. A professional clarinetist with experience in arts management, Bailis served for eight years as director of ODC Theater and has served as a peer review and policy specialist for many foundations. He holds degrees from Northwestern University and Yale School of Music.
