On June 9, New York City-based Ensemble Connect will perform on Governors Island for the first time at the annual Rite of Summer Music Festival of outdoor concerts of classical and contemporary music. Ensemble Connect’s program will feature a new work by Andy Akiho, premiered on June 5 at the Pocantico Center in Tarrytown, N.Y.; they will also perform Charles Wuorinen’s Spinoff, Osvaldo Golijov’s Tenebrae for String Quartet, and Jennifer Higdon’s Summer Shimmers. The free concerts at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. will include all eighteen Ensemble Connect musicians as they approach the end of their two-year fellowship. Ensemble Connect is a collective of young professional classical musicians created in 2007 by Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education.
