From June 8 to 10, the Richmond Symphony will perform at Festival of the River in Richmond, Virginia, along with more than 30 Richmond-based groups participating in the “three-day celebration of music, art, and environment.” On June 8, the orchestra will perform an evening concert with No BS! Brass and singer/songwriter Rhiannon Giddens. On June 9, the Richmond Symphony will perform with tap dancer Savion Glover. On June 10, the orchestra will perform an afternoon concert featuring selections such as Alan Silvestri’s Captain America theme and Bizet’s Suite No. 1 from Carmen. The June 10 concert will take place during a picnic where community members create a mosaic “quilt” image of the James River using donated blankets. The quilt project is spearheaded by Art on Wheels, a nonprofit that brings art to underserved communities; after the festival, blankets will be donated to area homeless service organizations. Other festival activities include performances by Host of Sparrows Aerial Circus, light installations on bridges leading to the island, river cleanups, and environmental education activities.
