This summer’s Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) training program for young musicians will take place from June 17 to August 11 on the Tanglewood campus in Lenox, Massachusetts. Musicians will participate in workshops led by performers and teachers from Boston University College of Fine Arts and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and perform concerts at Ozawa Hall and the Koussevitzky Music Shed. The institute’s 2018 visiting artists will be Teddy Abrams, music director of the Louisville Orchestra (BUTI ’03 alumnus), and bassist Joseph Conyers, assistant principal bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra (BUTI ’98 alumnus). Composer Nico Muhly (BUTI ’96, ’97 alumnus) will serve as artist in residence. Over eight weeks, students and faculty will perform more than 100 concerts and community events, including 30 free performances at non-traditional venues such as retirement communities, libraries, and parks, as part of the institute’s expanded community engagement programming in Berkshire County. Health and wellness classes have been incorporated into the institute’s core curriculum, which now includes injury prevention, body mapping, yoga, Alexander Technique, the Feldenkrais Method, and a seminar on managing performance anxiety.
