This summer’s Chamber Music Northwest Summer Festival will take place from June 25 to July 29 at Reed College, Portland State University, and other venues throughout the Portland, Oregon region. Highlights of programming under this year’s artistic director, clarinetist David Shifrin, include Beyond the Cultural Revolution, which will explore contemporary Chinese music and feature Bright Sheng’s chamber opera The Silver River, a 1997 CMNW commission with a libretto by David Henry Hwang; Xiaogang Ye’s Gardenia; and Vivian Fung’s clarinet quintet Frenetic Memories. There will also be a Chinese music and instrument demonstration. The festival will also feature music by Mozart, Duke Ellington, Nokuthula Ngwenyama, Valerie Coleman, Jeff Scott, and John Luther Adams. Ten young artists, known as Protégé Project Artists, will perform with professional musicians at the festival: the Kenari Saxophone Quartet, Verona String Quartet, pianist Daniel Hsu, and composer J.P. Redmond.
