NICHOLAS R. MOWRY has been appointed principal viola of the Lake Forest Symphony in Illinois. Mowry (b. 1993) holds two bachelor’s degrees in viola performance and music composition and a master’s degree in viola performance from Michigan State University. He has performed with the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble and with many regional orchestras in Michigan while serving as a member of the Lansing Symphony Orchestra. Mowry has appeared in masterclasses with Charles Pikler, former principal violist of the Chicago Symphony; Shmuel Ashkenasi, founder of the Vermeer Quartet; and other violists. While studying with the University of Wisconsin’s Alvaro Garcia, he won the Kenosha Symphony Concerto Competition, and he made his debut solo performance with that orchestra in 2010. In addition to performing, Mowry composes instrumental concert work with a focus on string writing, as well as occasional film scoring.
