The Des Moines Symphony will hold its 25th annual Yankee Doodle Pops concert on July 2 on the West Terrace of the Iowa State Capitol, led by Music Director Joseph Giunta. Repertoire for the concert will include the “Armed Forces Salute,” “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, with howitzer cannons and fireworks; bass-baritone Simon Estes, an Iowa native, will perform “Ol’ Man River,” “God Bless America,” and other selections with the orchestra. The winner of the orchestra’s ninth annual “Oh Say, Can You Sing?” Competition will perform the “Star Spangled Banner” to open the program. The free concert is billed as Iowa’s largest single-day concert event.
