The Minnesota Orchestra has announced that AKIKO FUJIMOTO, the orchestra’s assistant conductor since 2017, has been named associate conductor for the 2018-19 season. As assistant conductor, Fujimoto was a cover conductor for classical subscription and Live at Orchestra Hall concerts, conducted the Orchestra’s Common Chords performances in Mankato, led young people’s concerts, and led educational sessions during the orchestra’s January 2018 tour to Indiana and Illinois. This summer, she conducts the orchestra’s free outdoor performances in multiple nearby cities and leads the first full-orchestra Sensory-Friendly Family concert. Fujimoto served for five years as associate conductor of the San Antonio Symphony in Texas. Prior to that, she was the conducting associate for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. She has guest-conducted the Houston Symphony, Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, Round Rock Symphony Orchestra, and Fort Wayne Philharmonic. At Harvard University, she directed the Mozart Society Orchestra, and at Stanford University she led the Stanford Symphony Orchestra. She held the positions of director of orchestras at Virginia’s College of William & Mary and music director of the Williamsburg Youth Orchestras.
