“The South Shore Summer Music Festival is a symphonic tradition that fosters orchestral appreciation and a sense of community,” writes Bob Kostanczuk in Thursday’s (7/12) Post-Tribune (northwest Indiana). On July 21, “The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 12th annual outdoor festival … at Cedar Lake’s town complex grounds. Visiting a total of six Northwest Indiana communities, the 2018 fest wraps up Aug. 11 at Schererville’s Redar Park. Free to the public, the musical evenings are designed to offer ‘something for everyone,’ according to Kirk Muspratt, the orchestra’s conductor and music director. The pieces will swing from light classical to mainstream-movie fare, and more.… The … shows allows a good opportunity for the orchestra to connect with its audiences. ‘You’re part of the community; we actually just get to know people,’ said Muspratt…. ‘They’re the same people who come every year,’ he said. ‘They come up and give you a hug after.’ … One hour before showtime at each summer concert, Plum Grove Music of Lowell will host a free interactive ‘Instrument Garden’ that offers the opportunity for children and adults to become more familiar with orchestral instruments by handling and playing them.”
