“Alasdair Neale, raised in Great Britain but with ‘life-changing’ ties to Yale, was named Tuesday as new music director of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, replacing fellow British native William Boughton, who will end his 12-year tenure with the orchestra in May 2019,” writes Joe Amarante in Tuesday’s (7/17) New Haven Register (Connecticut). “Neale, 56, was introduced to media members, school officials and NHSO partners via computer from his living room in the Bay Area of California, where he has been music director of the Sun Valley (Idaho) Summer Symphony for 24 years and the Marin Symphony for 17 years.… NHSO board of directors President Paul Hermes … noted that Neale, raised in London and Scotland, received his bachelor’s degree from Cambridge University and his master’s from Yale School of Music over three years. He then spent another three years here as conductor of the Yale Symphony Orchestra…. Neale’s tenure doesn’t even begin for a year, after the symphony’s upcoming 125th anniversary season, but he said he will … participate in planning and listen to people about possibilities, challenges and opportunities. He said one of the first tasks will be to assemble the 2019-20 season and book guest artists.”
