The Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra program will launch a new wind ensemble this fall, which will meet once a week at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School. To participate in the ensemble—for intermediate-level flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion players—participants must meet or exceed the proficiency level outlined at the Richmond Symphony’s website. Christopher Moseley, director of bands and orchestra at Varina High School in Henrico, Virginia, will conduct the ensemble. Students in the ensemble will perform in winter and spring concerts. More than 260 students participate in the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra programs. “We believe the addition of a Wind Ensemble is integral to the growth of our Youth Orchestra Program,” said youth orchestra manager Corinne Smith in a press release. “The ensemble is designed to offer challenging repertoire for motivated participants…. Participants who progress through the program will be prepared to audition for the Youth Concert Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra, and other honors ensemble throughout the state.”
