The Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s 2019 Soluna International Music and Arts Festival will include the world premiere of Caravan: A Revolution on the Road, a multi-disciplinary collaboration by jazz artist Terence Blanchard, choreographer Rennie Harris, and Dallas-based visual artist Andrew Scott. The April 9 premiere will take place at the Dallas’s Majestic Theatre, featuring Blanchard and his band, the E-Collective, choreography by Harris and dance by his company, Puremovement, and Scott’s visual projections, sculpture, and projection mapping. The performance will expand upon the theme of racial tension and injustice, which Blanchard began exploring a few years ago. Prior to the performance, SOLUNA and Dallas Black Dance Theatre will co-host a free community discussion about racial healing and the arts, with panel members Blanchard, Andrew Scott, and emerging choreographer and Dallas native My’kal J. Stromile. “SOLUNA has always been a festival in which the Dallas Symphony pushes beyond its traditional genres and performances to engage and connect with audiences in new ways,” says Dallas Symphony Orchestra President and CEO Kim Noltemy. “Caravan is an extension of that and directly discusses important and tragic events from Dallas’s recent history. More importantly, it demonstrates how music and art can be the catalyst for positive and meaningful social change.”
