“I recently returned home from Los Angeles, where I was privileged to teach on the faculty of the League of American Orchestras’ Essentials of Orchestra Management seminar,” writes Scott Faulkner in Monday’s (7/30) Reno Gazette Journal (NV). Faulkner is principal bass of the Reno Philharmonic and Reno Chamber Orchestra, and former executive director of the RCO. “Here are some thoughts on what great leaders in the arts, or anywhere, need: Vision: An effective leader must have a clear sense of where she and the organization are headed and why—money follows vision. Fuel: In order for a leader to be effective, he must have gas in his personal tank … a perspective-giving work-life balance…. Essentialism: Effective leaders make space for the things that really matter. Maturity: A great leader stays in control of his emotions in a tense situation. Selflessness: The ability to put others and the cause ahead of oneself and to gain satisfaction from the success of others is a trait of great leaders. Willingness to do the difficult: To make unpopular decisions, fire people or simply not be liked can be the unenviable part of holding a position of leadership. Inspiration: A great leader is inspired and inspiring.” For more about the League’s Essentials of Orchestra Management program, click here.
