University of Illinois Press has published Black Opera: History, Power, Engagement by Naomi André, an associate professor in African and Afroamerican Studies and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan. Alan Belkin’s Musical Composition: Craft and Art, an introduction to music composition, has been published by Yale University Press. Gundula Kreuzer’s Curtain, Gong, Steam: Wagnerian Technologies of Nineteenth-Century Opera has been published by University of California Press. E. Randol Schoenberg, grandson of composers Arnold Schoenberg and Eric Zeisl, is editor of The Doctor Faustus Dossier: Arnold Schoenberg, Thomas Mann, and Their Contemporaries, 1930-1951, recently published by University of California Press. The study focuses on Schoenberg-Mann correspondence and their dispute over Mann’s novel Doctor Faustus; both emigrated to Los Angeles during the Nazi era. Rare Bird Books has published the novel Beethoven’s Tenth by Richard Kluger, a publishing executive and author of several previous novels as well as nonfiction works including Indelible Ink, about the birth of America’s free press, and Simple Justice, about the Supreme Court’s 1954 landmark Brown decision outlawing school segregation.
