“Steve Robinson, the former general manager and executive vice president of WFMT and the WFMT Radio Network … recently launched ‘Classical Profiles’ (www.classicalprofiles.com), an audio download series that he believes ‘might just create a new audience for classical music,’ ” writes Rick Kogan in Tuesday’s (8/14) Chicago Tribune. “[In his] 16 years at WFMT-FM 98.7 … he helped create and syndicate the ‘Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin’ series and was essential in launching the Studs Terkel Radio Archive … in partnership with the Chicago History Museum. ‘Classical Profiles’ is not intended for the classical aficionado but rather for, as Robinson says, ‘people who have some passing interest in classical music.’ … The debut effort of ‘Classical Profiles’ … is a three-part presentation of the life and the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. Robinson is its editor and John Tibbetts its writer and narrator. Each episode is a bit more than 30 minutes and each features an average of 15 musical excerpts as we hear the life story of the composer…. This venture is not a podcast in the conventional sense, in that it is not scheduled on a regular basis… Next up is a 10-episode series on Mozart.”
