“The Fox Valley Symphony Youth Orchestra, ‘YO’ for short, provides wonderful opportunities for local students to make music,” writes Emily Hauer, a violinist in the orchestra, in Saturday’s (8/18) Post-Crescent (Appleton, WI). “We enjoy playing wide selections of orchestral music together, from Brahms to Harry Potter… [At] our annual Education Concert … where we perform for over 1,000 grade-school students … the energy that we feel coming from the audience members keeps us focused on the real purpose of music. We are conducted by Andres Moran…. Many of us are musically motivated outside of YO as well…. Three of my friends and I formed a string quartet…. Jamie Lafreniere, the executive director of the Fox Valley Symphony, was so kind as to find our quartet opportunities to perform the music we prepared. A great learning experience for us was when our rehearsals were broken down into sectionals led by professional musicians from the area.… YO has inspired me to pursue a career in orchestral playing by preparing me to be a good follower and a good leader…. Being a member of an orchestra is a powerful experience because you can feel the power of having many people working together to create sound.”
