“If there is a music gene in the Golan family pool, it must be shaped like a violin,” writes Gordon Freireich in Monday’s (8/20) York Daily Record (PA). “Lawrence Golan, music director of the York Symphony Orchestra, is a violinist. Lawrence’s father was a violinist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Now Lawrence’s daughter, Giovanna, 8, is following in their footsteps. On a recent, one-week visit to York, Giovanna joined her father in taking music to several nursing and retirement homes…. The family’s trip to York was in anticipation of Lawrence Golan’s fifth anniversary year as conductor of the York Symphony Orchestra. The season … opens on September 23…. Lawrence is also very much aware of the changes that have taken place around the Appell Center for the Performing Arts [where the orchestra performs] in the past five years…. ‘The symphony plays a role in that. We’re playing double the number of concerts … and tripled the size of the audiences.’ … Lawrence is an advocate of community outreach. Prior to each classical concert he presents … ‘Fridays with the Maestro.’ He designs it ‘for people who love classical music.’ ”
