The Reno Philharmonic will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2019 with the world premiere of a commissioned work by Zhou Tian (in photo) about the Transcontinental Railroad, which will mark its 150th anniversary in 2019. The piece will focus on themes related to the railroad, including the post-Civil War era, the plight of migrant railroad builders, the opening of the West, and the creation of the city of Reno. The Reno Philharmonic is spearheading a group of several other co-commissioning orchestras, which will include the Omaha Symphony (home of one Transcontinental Railroad terminus), the Utah Symphony (home of the Golden Spike completion at Promontory Point), and the Michigan State University Symphony. The Reno Philharmonic will give the work’s world premiere in April 2019, and the consortium of orchestras will perform the work after that.
