The Chicago Sinfonietta will open its 2018-19 season with a program entitled “I.D. Images of Diversity,” showcasing the immigrant experience in America. Music Director Mei-Ann Chen will lead Copland’s Variations on a Shaker Melody, Verdi’s Overture to Nabucco, Marquez’s Danzón No. 2, James P. Johnson’s Drums: A Symphonic Poem, and Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: The Dream of America, the latter accompanied by video and featuring seven actors directed by George Cederquist, a member of Chicago’s Steep Theatre Company. Before the September 22 and 24 performances in Naperville and Chicago, and during intermission, audience members will be invited to celebrate their own identities with a #HowDoYouID social media challenge and learn about organizations supporting Chicagoland immigrant and refugee communities, including Latinos Progresando and World Relief.
