The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia’s 2018-19 season will open on October 7 with a program featuring Fela Sowande’s African Suite for String Orchestra and two works by Tunde Jegede: Interlude for solo kora, and Cycle of Reckoning for Kora and Chamber Orchestra, with the composer as soloist. The kora is a lute-like instrument used extensively in West Africa. Music Director Dirk Brossé will conduct the program at the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater, which will also include Schubert’s Overture in the Italian Style (D. 590) and the Symphony in D by Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga (1806-1826). The season, titled “Migrations,” will include concerts featuring composers of the Silk Road and African American composers, among others. Pipa player Wu Man will be soloist on an Asia-themed program of Mozart, Dvořák, and Harrison; mandolinist Caterina Lichtenberg will perform on a Bach, Vivaldi, and Corelli program (Europe); a concert of music by Falla, Villa-Lobos, and Clearfield (the Americas) will feature guitarist Jordon Dodson; and oud player Simon Shaheen will perform on a concert of Mozart, Saint-Saëns, and Shaheen (Middle East).
