Miami-based Nu Deco Ensemble will open its fourth season on October 11 with a jazz-influenced program at the Light Box at Goldman Warehouse. The program will include the overture to Leonard Bernstein’s On the Town, Wynton Marsalis’s A Fiddler’s Tale Suite, a reworking of Duke Ellington’s Caravan by Nu Deco co-founder and artistic director Sam Hyken, and a symphonic reimagining of Curtis Mayfield’s music by Nu Deco Ensemble members and Hyken. During the 2018-19 season, the orchestra will also perform music by Nico Muhly, Andy Akiho, Anna Meredith, William Brittelle, and Aaron Parks, plus a commissioned work from Magda Giannikou. In addition to performing at the New World Center, Arsht Center, the Light Box, and North Beach Bandshell, Nu Deco Ensemble also gives free educational and community engagement concerts at Homestead’s historic Seminole Theatre and the Arsht Center, and will launch a Nu Deco Jr. Youth Orchestra this season. Jacomo Bairos is Nu Deco Ensemble’s co-founder and conductor. Bairos is also music director of the Amarillo Symphony in Texas.
